Wordpress image uploads

This article applies to iDAQ's shared Web Hosting and Reseller Hosting on both the Linux and Windows platforms as well as Dedicated servers running the Plesk control panel.

This article addresses the issue of not being able to upload images in your Wordpress blog posts. The steps below will allow this functionality.

You may see the following message when trying to upload images to your Wordpress blog -

“image.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory /var/www/domain/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads/2011/09. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

The reason for this is that the "uploads" directory doesn't have the correct write permissions enabled to allow for images to be uploaded into blog posts in the Wordpress admin control panel. By default the permissions on the uploads directory are set with security in mind to stop rogue scripts from being uploaded and executing malicious code.

To change the uploads directory permissions to allow image uploads use an FTP client connect to the domains web hosting files using a preferred FTP client and using the login details setup in your iDAQ control panel or Plesk control panel depending on the type of hosting account you have with iDAQ. Then nagivate to the "httpdocs" folder, in here enter the "wp-content" directory (or first enter a subdirectory for the Wordpress blog if it's located in a subdirectory). Here you should see a directory named "uploads". Right+click on the folder and you should see an option to set the permissions. Here set the permissions of the uploads folder to be 777 Afterwards try uploading an image into a blog post, it should now upload the file and appear in the blog entry.
